In this guide, I’ll share how to get there, what to do around the mountain, and some tips for making the most of your trip.
Mount Tsukuba stands at 877 meters tall, with two peaks: Nantai-san (871 meters) and Nyotai-san (877 meters). Known as “Mount Fuji of the West, Mount Tsukuba of the East,” it has long been cherished by the Japanese people. The mountain is also known for its spiritual significance, with many shrines and historical sites scattered around.
There are various hiking trails catering to both beginners and experienced hikers. From Haneda Airport, take the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa Station, then transfer to the Yamanote Line to Akihabara Station. From Akihabara Station, take the Tsukuba Express (TX) to Tsukuba Station. From there, take the shuttle bus to the Mount Tsukuba trailhead. The journey takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
From Kansai International Airport, take the Shinkansen to Tokyo Station. From Tokyo Station, take the Tsukuba Express (TX) to Tsukuba Station, then take the shuttle bus to the Mount Tsukuba trailhead. The entire journey takes about 5 to 6 hours.
Around Mount Tsukuba, there are many onsen (hot spring) facilities. “Tsukuba Onsen” is particularly recommended for relaxing after a hike, with beautiful views of the Kanto Plain. Outdoor baths and foot baths are available for a soothing experience.
There are various accommodation options around Mount Tsukuba. The foothills offer luxurious onsen ryokan and resort hotels with stunning views. Additionally, Tsukuba City has many business hotels and guesthouses to suit different budgets. Accommodations in the Tsukuba Onsen area are especially recommended for enjoying hot springs and beautiful scenery.
