Nemuro Station is the easternmost JR station in Japan and serves as the gateway to exploring the Nemuro area. It marks the end of the JR Hanasaki Line, which connects the city with Kushiro. The station building houses a tourist information center, and the surrounding area includes restaurants, hotels, and a bus terminal—making it a convenient first stop for travelers arriving in Japan’s far east. The calm atmosphere of this port town perfectly reflects the remoteness of the region.
Here are the main ways to reach Nemuro Station from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo.
There are two main routes to Nemuro: via Kushiro and via Nakashibetsu Airport.
By Air + Bus + Train
New Chitose Airport ⇒ Kushiro Airport: approx. 50 min
Kushiro Airport ⇒ Kushiro Station: direct bus, approx. 45–55 min (¥950)
Kushiro Station ⇒ Nemuro Station (JR Hanasaki Line): approx. 2 hr 20 min (¥3,080)
The JR Hanasaki Line from Kushiro to Nemuro offers scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and wetlands. Because the number of trains is limited, it is best to check the timetable in advance.
The Hanasaki Line operates about five round trips per day. The area around Atsunai and Ochiai stations offers especially beautiful coastal scenery when the weather is clear.

New Chitose Airport ⇒ Nakashibetsu Airport: approx. 50 min (ANA flight)
Nakashibetsu Airport ⇒ Nemuro Station Bus Terminal: approx. 95 min (Nemuro Kotsu Bus / ¥1,970 round-trip)

Although the number of buses is limited, this route requires fewer transfers and is less tiring if the schedules connect well.
There are around five bus departures per day, coordinated with flight arrivals. However, the bus does not always wait for delayed flights, so please check the timetable in advance.
