Tamakonnyaku is one of Yamagata Prefecture’s local foods (the three balls on the skewer in the front of the photo).
The culture of eating konjac may not be very common outside Japan.
Konjac is eaten all over Japan, but tamakonnyaku is something unique to Yamagata.
Konjac is about 97% water, and it has only about 5–7 kcal per 100 grams,
so it’s popular as a diet food.
Tamakonnyaku is made by simmering round konjac balls in soy sauce, sugar, sake, mirin, and dashi (Japanese soup stock).
Because of this simple seasoning, it’s flavorful but not very high in calories.
You can find tamakonnyaku all over Yamagata.
At shops, it’s usually sold skewered on sticks.
At supermarkets, it’s more often sold without skewers.
